For over eighteen years now Airdrie's Double T Equipment Ltd. has been at the forefront of customized equipment for bulk material handling, blending and storage systems, and the mushroom growing industry.

During the past ten years Double T has built almost all of the major fertilizer trans-shipping centres in the prairie provinces. Double T designed and built the conveying system for the Shell Canada, Caroline formed sulphur facility. Double T designed and built a Pre-Wet Machine (Patent Pending) for the mushroom growing industry which has revolutionized preconditioning of the growing medium. Now Double T is on the verge of becoming a big player in the solid waste composting field.

Double T Equipment Ltd. was founded in 1976 with a focus on customized equipment. Its foremost strength is in combining engineering and design skills together with an intimate understanding of the needs of its customers.

As a result, Double T has achieved a proven track record over nearly two decades of technical innovation. Double T employs approximately 20 people including its officers: Thomas Thomas, President, Ronald David, Vice-President, and Christine Thomas, Secretary-Treasurer.

The Airdrie manufacturer pioneered a systematic approach that fully integrates its design and production capabilities - from planning, engineering design and prototyping through to manufacturing and installations. Realizing the customer's conceptual objectives in the finished product form is the principal goal. It's a highly interactive process, hinging on the effectiveness with which ideas are communicated and applied, tested and proven. The system, a precedent-setting concept eighteen years ago, is still at the foundation of Double T's reputation for reliable products and performance.

During the 1980s Double T became concerned with environmental issues. After in-house studies and consultation with experts in the field of waste management, it was decided that the equipment and technology developed by Double T for mushroom production could be readily adapted and used for the composting of municipal and industrial waste.

Using the enclosed, fully automated composting systems familiar in the mushroom growing industry, Double T is able to compost waste within a free-standing enclosure or 'tunnel' using a computer to monitor and control air flow, oxygen content, moisture levels, and temperature. The controlled air flow results in a minimum amount of odor being released into the atmosphere from the process, allowing facilities to be placed closer to the municipalities, thereby reducing transportation costs.

We've been building our tunnel composting systems for over 12 years,' said Thomas Thomas. The system has been described as a 'sound basis for cost-effective implementable solid waste management.

Thomas says the growth potential of manufacturing the tunnel composting system is 'absolutely staggering'. He adds, The next three to five years should see a widespread application of these systems, and a huge growth in the industry worldwide. And on the cusp of this new market is Airdrie's Double T.
