The Composting Technology Centre (CTC) is a unique program in North America, dedicated to all aspects of composting technology. Development work towards founding the CTC was initiated in 1991 with an eight-month study to evaluate the feasibility of having a composting program within the facilities at Olds College. Olds College is a venerable Alberta institution, founded in 1913 to offer training in agriculture and related areas. Olds College continues its tradition of a practical and hands-on approach to higher education, with a focus on giving students the training and skills to enter successfully their chosen professional vocation. In the Olds College tradition of cooperation with industry, Double T Equipment Ltd. is an active collaborator in the CTC. Double T supports two full time scientific staff positions to the CTC on a partial cost recovery basis. Double T also has provided for the CTC's usage advanced equipment, including a windrow turning machine, a large pilot scale tunnel composting unit, a pilot bunker composting unit, and materials handling equipment for tunnel loading and unloading. Double T works cooperatively with the CTC on some projects, and Double T also carries out some commercial and demonstration projects on its own using the facilities at the CTC. An example of a Double T project being carried out at the CTC is a new project with Money's Mushrooms using a bunker Phase I system to produce a Phase I compost for Phase II shelves or trays.
